Overview
Behind every successful EVE Online alliance is a digital backbone that keeps members connected, informed, and coordinated. For our 100+ member alliance, I lead the technical infrastructure and cross-cultural communication strategy that bridges our English-speaking and Chinese-speaking communities—ensuring both sides can collaborate seamlessly in high-stakes operations.
This role combines technical execution, strategic planning, and cultural mediation, making it as much about people as it is about systems.
Leadership & Responsibilities
As the alliance’s IT Lead, Architect, and Communications Facilitator, I:
-
Set the strategic direction for our IT systems, ensuring scalability, security, and resilience.
-
Maintain mission-critical infrastructure—including Alliance Auth for identity and access management, and Mumble for secure voice communications.
-
Develop and manage custom tools to give our alliance a competitive edge, including:
- Advanced timerboards for event and structure tracking.
- Automated tax management software for alliance finances.
- Intelligence gathering platforms for strategic planning.
-
Foster cross-cultural collaboration by:
- Bridging language barriers during fleet operations and leadership meetings.
- Ensuring all tools, announcements, and strategic updates are accessible to both English and Chinese speakers.
- Maintaining trust and understanding across diverse cultural contexts.
-
Coordinate with alliance leadership to align technology and communications with our strategic goals.
-
Provide support and onboarding to members, ensuring both communities fully benefit from our systems.
Key Systems & Innovations
- Centralized Access Management - Alliance Auth integration for secure, role-based access to all services.
- Voice Communications - High-availability Mumble hosting for real-time fleet coordination.
- Custom Event Tracking - In-house timerboards for monitoring strategic in-game objectives.
- Automated Finance Tools - Tax management software that reduces manual overhead.
- Intelligence Platforms - Data collection and analysis tools that guide tactical decisions.
- Bilingual Communications - Structured channels, translation workflows, and dual-language updates to keep all members informed.
Challenges
Running IT and communications for a bilingual alliance adds complexity to already demanding infrastructure work:
- Balancing security, accessibility, and cultural sensitivity.
- Coordinating multi-language fleet operations under time pressure.
- Scaling systems and communications to handle peak activity in multiple time zones.
- Creating custom software that works equally well for both language groups.
Outcomes
Through a combination of technical leadership and cultural bridge-building, I’ve created an environment where:
- Our alliance’s IT systems are stable, secure, and scalable.
- Both English and Chinese speakers work together seamlessly in fleets, planning, and day-to-day operations.
- Automated systems reduce administrative work, freeing leadership to focus on strategy.
- Our community remains cohesive, even across language and cultural boundaries.
This project demonstrates my ability to lead technical initiatives, facilitate international teamwork, and align technology and communication strategies with organizational goals—delivering both operational excellence and cultural unity.
